-John 1: 5&6 NLT-
“The light shines in the darkness,
and the darkness can never extinguish it.”
The contrast of light and dark is age old, but what exactly are they? What truly is the light? Are light and darkness as simple of concepts as day and night or just the sun and the moon? This is not so.
According to the Bible, God Himself is the light.
-1 John 1:5 NIV-
“This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all.”
Furthermore, there is the light of the world, which consists of two things: the first being Jesus Christ Himself, and the second being, the believers and followers of Jesus Christ (which hopefully is including you!!!)
-John 8:12 NIV-
“When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
-Matthew 5:14-16 NIV-
“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”
Therefore, God is the creator of light and is light inherently Himself. Next, Jesus is the light of the world, the light of our lives, and this title and power was bestowed upon Him by the Father. Lastly, we as believers are also the light of the world; the representatives of Jesus Christ himself, possessors of a great Light, a shining light to all on-lookers, a light to our church and a light even to our families.
Light (Father God) -> Light of the World (Jesus Christ) -> Subsequent Lights of the World (Christian Believers)
Then, what is darkness? Darkness is described as many things in the Bible, but easily put and stemming from the aforementioned verse above (1 John 1:5), it is the absence of God and anything and everything that is opposed to Him. That is one reason why, we are ushered to live a life walking with God, because without Him, we would be in darkness, not knowing the way or where to go.
Are you with me? So now, what should we do with this knowledge and information? These instructions are from Jesus Christ Himself:
-John 12:35 NKJV-
“Then Jesus said to them, “A little while longer the light is with you. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you; he who walks in darkness does not know where he is going.”
I believe Jesus is calling us today to trust in Him. That we should walk in the perfect plans that God has prepared for us (Ephesians 2:10) and live a life walking in accordance with God’s will, following all His commandments to the best of our ability, through His Holy Spirit, the Helper, who is solely responsible for working good works within us.
Christian brothers and sisters, Thank You for being the Light of the world, the light to your household, and the light to all those who are around you. Thank You for choosing Jesus Christ and to walk in His marvelous light, because truly the benefits are insurmountable!
Let’s walk boldly before Him forevermore, Amen!
