Origami Tracts for Japanese Evangelism: How and Why

One of the aspects of my ministry is making handmade Christian origami tracks. I fold the origami myself and them turn them into Christian tracts by writing Bible verses on them and direct message of love from God (Jesus loves you, Jesus cares for you, etc.). I then affix them on onigiri (rice balls), then they are all set to go! I give them out to the homeless on the streets of Nishinari and also at our Bible study. This evangelism tool has proven effective here in Japan as I’ve found that the Japanese homeless are:
1. Gladly willing to accept a familiar comfort food (rice ball)
2. Willing to accept origami, a familiar traditional and nostalgic item

Using the Japanese’s own traditions and what is already important and familiar to them is a great way to connect them to Jesus! Folding origami has been around in Japan since the Edo Period (17th Century) and did you know that each origami holds a symbolic meaning depending on what structure is folded?
Some origami I have folded are:
Fish: which represent determination and courage and symbolize happiness
– Lotus flowers: which represent grace and symbolize purity
-Heart: which can represent love, spirit or soul

I am always seeking to be very intentional with the origami that I am folding. I take into deep consideration what the structure represents and pray heavily about which scripture message to write on it for that day. I’m grateful that God is using this evangelism tool to reach the lost, feed the homeless and create an opportunity for them to encounter Him and His love (and to be saved)! I thank God for allowing me to serve in this capacity and pray that more and more Japanese will come to know the Lord! God bless you and let us continue to pray for the people of Nishinari in Japan!
Thank you so much!
