The Battle of the Mind

The Lord was pressing this message upon my heart today;

Our own thinking has the ability to put us in chains.

Everyone is aware that science has proven that the human brain is the most powerful tool we have in the world. Without our unique brain, we wouldn’t be capable of the amazing technological inventions and advancements of modern day society.

Although our minds have the ability to think great things into being, we should also be aware (especially as Christians) of the power of our minds to think negative things into being too.

Our thought-life is single-handedly the most important part of ourselves that we need to take into the obedience of Christ. God knows this and has left us many instructions in scripture about this.

“You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness. – Ephesians 23-24 (NIV)

When we become saved and accept Jesus’ truth into our lives, we leave behind our corrupted “old self.” Since our old self (our flesh or sin nature) was crucified on the cross with Jesus and buried, that is where our sin nature should stay- buried. What was resurrected into new life is our new self, Jesus’ righteousness and Holy Spirit fully in tact, alive and working within us. Now that we walk in newness of spirit, we should no longer walk after the flesh (Romans 6:4). This is what modern day Christians call being, “born again.”

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will” – Romans 12:2 (NIV)

The apostle Paul wrote this scripture, understanding that in order to be transformed, we have to start thinking in a new direction and experience mind renewal. We cannot serve God if our thought-life is hung up on old patterns or dead things of our past.

“For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he” – Proverbs 23:7 (KJV)

Our minds have the power to facilitate the direction of our lives. Whatever we believe about ourselves, the Bible says, that’s what we truly are. If we believe lies about ourselves (we are worthless, we don’t deserve to live, nobody cares about us) negative things being to manifest in our lives. The Bible is clear that what we think becomes our reality.

In order to live an empowered life for Christ, we HAVE to understand who our Father is. Since our Father is the God of heaven and earth, we are the sons and daughters of God. Now that we exist under the spirit of adoption, we can no longer afford to act like we live under an orphan spirit! What I’m saying is that to free ourselves from habitual sin and negative thought patterns, we have to understand WHO we are in Christ. Redeemed, loved, spoken for, wanted, called, empowered and chosen. That IS your reality.

Many times, we fail to remember who our Father is and that can create space for lies about ourselves to manifest. Once we believe these lies, we can no longer be strong in the activation of the Holy Spirit due to the fact that we are under demonic influence in our minds. The Bible clearly depicts our mind as battleground for spiritual warfare. Scripture also tells us how we are victorious and how we have the power to combat every negative emotion and notion!

“Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ” – 2 Corinthians 10:5 (KJV)

Spending time in your Bible is the best way to arm your mind with spiritual truth which can be used to combat “every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge to God.” In Ephesians 6: 13-17, we are also told we have the full Armor of God. One piece of our armor is the sword, which is the Word of God. The Word of God is our powerful, offensive weapon which we need to use to do spiritual battle! (Ephesians 6: 13-17).

We no longer have to get stuck in patterns of negative thinking, self-doubt or self-pity anymore! God gave us HIS MIND so that we can think like Him! We have the ability to think, act and be just like Jesus through the Word of Truth and the power of the Holy Spirit living inside of you!

“Who has known the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him?” But we have the mind of Christ. – 1 Corinthians 2:16 (NIV)

As we deepen our relationship with God and get to know our Father more and more, He implants truth in us so that we are not easily shaken! We are powerful in Christ and our walk with God truly begins with KNOWING this in our minds.

Be encouraged brothers and sisters in the Lord ❤
